Where you are allowed to have tax deductions (to keep the rescue running my idea was possibly time to time have people donate a horse to be resold to an approved home, to make a profit to care for the horses.
How many horses would have to be took in a year? Is there a minimum number?
Thanks
(I'm in IL)
There's no minimum number. You do have to establish yourself as a non-profit agency — the 501(c)3 status. Lots of paperwork. Be careful with the terminology — you'll not be "selling" the horses but rather will be "adopting" them… for a fee.
(1) talk to friends, family, local businesspeople, see if you have the support of your community;
(2) plan the structure of your organization — incorporate, hold initial meeting, have fundraisers/membership drive;
(3) open a checking account to deposit funds; begin keeping records immediately; can use Quickbooks or something similar, or make up your own with Excel; begin keeping written documentation of all activity;
(4) be sure you have the facilities to keep the horses; you will rescue many that aren't immediately adoptable;
(5) advertise…. remember that you'll receive a LOT more calls from peole needing your help than those wanting to adopt
This is NOT a complete list, just something to get you headed in the right direction.
I'll be happy to help you in more detail if you wish, just e-mail me. Oh, and join local rescue groups, so you have the help of other local rescuers.

Hi everyone,
I need effective and easy fundraising ideas for a horse rescue in Maryland where I am a volunteer. We have a volunteer shortage and are extremely low on funds, to the point where we may eventually need to close a farm if things continue this way. We care for around 100 horses at our two farms, and around 50 fosters, as well as some donkeys, mules, and ponies.
I need some ideas for fundraising that will not take a great deal of manpower - ideas for marketing and public awareness activities are also welcome.
By the way, more info about the rescue can be found at www.horsenethorserescue.org - if you are able to volunteer or provide online donations, especially at this difficult time, please check the site for more info. We would appreciate it!
Thanks for the ideas and assistance.
accept items of interest for resale. sort of a thrift store operation. there is nothing like getting something for your donation. you might can get a location donated.

Earlier in the year in the state where I live there was a man that was accused of animal cruelty and the people who owned the horse farm that he was leasing donated the land to a rescue. I want to help some how but cant adopt any of the horses now that they are healthy.
donate your time to help feed, walk, clean stalls, clean / brush the horses, attention / love, etc. your time will be greatly appreciated believe me. there is a lot to do when taking care of a horse properly. i wish there were more people like you, who want to help out any way possible. be proud of yourself for caring.

If anyone could give me the websites of some California horse rescues that buy horses from kill auctions and adopt them out to loving homes that would be great.
I am looking for a well established rescue that I can donate to.
Anubis * Star, you may think that but there are still many people willing to drive horses to slaughter plants to make money, for dealers it is their only income and they will do anything to make a living. California is quite close to Mexico and I want to help these organizations prevent horses from going to this hell.
definitely TB friends! It’s the largest horse rescue in the US, he mostly takes TB’s from feedlots that are headed to slaughter in Mexico or Canada, but he also has been facilitating adopting lots of horses out from ranch foreclosures. You can check out the website, www.tbfriends.com, there is a daily journal that’s great to read too : )

I'm asking because I have room and means for maybe one more horse, but I know of at least a dozen that need homes and will be going to the sale soon to God knows what fate.
LEGITIMATE rescues (not horse traders with a clever marketing ploy) in our area are at capacity and always begging for help…food, supplies, donations, labor…so I'm a little curious here.
People should be very wary of "rescues" that have a high turnover of animals but are unable to show you documentation about where they were placed and how diligently they check out the adopters and keep track.
There was a lady and her husband in my area who had a horse related business for awhile…kept all the "anti-slaughter" literature and legislation info posted in their store…and they would take on peoples' rejects…keep them for a little bit, until they were pretty sure the owner wasn't going to be coming by to visit…and then running them through the sale.
All rescues are always overloaded and begging for help.
I am really sick of people thinking no kill shelters and rescues are the answer. Its up to the people to stop. Its up to the population to stop letting animals breed and to stop giving money to anyone for a life.
We do have a horse rescue we work with but they are also loaded. They do have a pretty good set up. For so many hours of volunteer they give riding lessons. I hope that idea may help you get people in to help you.
Remember just because a volunteer can't come out and physically help with a horse they could possible search for grants to help you. ANyone that shows an interest find something for them to do. They could call local companies and ask for donations. They can call news stations and ask them to do a story on helping you find homes and recruit other volunteers.
I hope all goes well and you rescue many lives.
May the force be with you.
Jennifer
