Pony Family Gift Set by Breyer. Ponies! Whether running wild or performing under saddle, these pint-sized equines are easy to love. Though they come in different breeds and colors, ponies always measure under 14.2 hands (58 inches) tall. This stallion is the father of his family, a proud and spirited animal whose color is called dun (golden tan). Horses and ponies this color also have primitive markings like stripes down their backs, and, sometimes, markings like a zebras stripes on their shoulders or legs. While the stallion stands watch over his family, the mare, or mother, often nurses her baby, or foal. Like horses, ponies recognize each other through their sense of smell, and talk to each other through taste and touch. Body language is important; a flick of the ear or a roll of the eye can signal alarm. Ponies like to be around other ponies, and they make friends by grooming each other. A mares relationship to her foal is especially strong. She will protect him and teach him how to survive, both in the wild and around humans. This mare is a grulla pinto. That means shes spotted with white and a smoky shade of dun, or grulla. Like duns, horses and ponies with grullo or grulla coloration may also have primitive markings. Her foal is a dun pinto, with traits from both parents. Foals stand and nurse soon after birth. Then theyre ready to run with the herd! Ponies are hardy, and often grow thick winter coats to protect them from the cold. Trusty, surefooted and clever, they make wonderful teachers for children when trained for riding or driving. And, despite their small size, ponies can do everything a horse can and then some! No wonder theyre the darlings of the horse world.
